Master of Science (Thesis) - 30 Credit Hours
Minimum - 12 credit hours of EMA 5000-6000 (excluding S/U courses)
Maximum - 6 credit hours of EMA 6971 Master's Research *
(must have registration in EMA 6971 during final term three hours fall or spring and two hours during summer)
Maximum - 8 credit hours of EMA 6905 Individual Work
Maximum - 5 credit hours of EMA 6910 Supervised Research
*Please note that students generally take more credits of Master's Research, but only 6 will apply to the degree.
Master of Science (Non-Thesis) - 32 Credit Hours
Maximum - 6 credit hours of (S/U) graded course work(excluding EMA 6971, EMA 7979, and EMA 7980)
Minimum - 16 credit hours of EMA 5000-6000
(excluding S/U graded courses)
Maximum - 8 credit hours of EMA 6905 Individual Work
All other course work must be letter graded (not S/U courses)
Doctor of Philosophy - 90 Credit Hours
Minimum - 18 credit hours of EMA 5000-6000
(excluding S/U courses)
Maximum - 8 credit hours of EMA 6905 Individual Work
Maximum - 5 credit hours of EMA 6910 Supervised Research
Research hours - Before admission to candidacy (successful completion of the written and oral qualifying exams) a Ph.D. student must take EMA 7979.
After admission to candidacy a Ph.D. candidate - must take EMA 7980.
You must be registered for a minimum of three credit hours of EMA7980 if graduating Fall or Spring or two credit hours if graduating Summer for your final semester requirements.

All graduate degrees
All graduate students must take EMA 6936 (Seminar) each Fall and each Spring (except if they enroll in 9 hours of graded course work). However, (even if not enrolled) students must attend the seminars and sign the attendance sheet each week.Only two courses (8 credits max) of EMA 6938 (Special Topics) are allowed to count toward a graduate degree.
Only two 3000 level or above, Undergraduate courses, with the advance written permission of the advisor may be taken and allowed to count toward a graduate degree. These cannot exceed 6 credit hours and must be courses outside of the Materials Science and Engineering Department. ENS courses will not count toward a Materials Science and Engineering degree.
