After successful completion of both the written qualifying exam and the proposal defense a Ph.D. student will be admitted to candidacy. If you do this before the midpoint of a semester the grad school will convert EMA7979 hours to EMA7980. If you achieve this after the midpoint then the grad school requires you to register in a subsequent semester.
