Curriculum Planning

The responsibility of every student's curriculum planning will rest on the student and his/her advisor/supervisor. Long-term and semester-by-semester advisement forms are available in Academic Services Office, 108 Rhines Hall and on the web. Additional consultation with their Research Supervisory Committee (RSC) as necessary is strongly encouraged.

While the input from the other members of the RSC may be helpful and should be used as necessary, the supervisor has the primary responsibility for curriculum planning. Please note that the department no longer requires a student to take EMA 6805 (Math I) and EMA 6806 (Math II), but your advisor may still require these courses.

When the student initially arrives in the department, he/she should seek advisement in the Academic Services Office, 108 Rhines Hall, for their first semester. By the end of the second semester of study the student must form their supervisory committee. (Further information on forming a supervisory committee is explained in section 11) When the supervisory committee is formed, the student will meet with the Committee chairperson and form a comprehensive academic plan for the duration of study at the University of Florida.

This plan will include:

  1. which courses should be taken each semester until graduation
  2. the approximate date when the PhD qualifying exam will be taken (for PhD and MS Non-thesis students only)
  3. expected date of MS thesis defense (for MS thesis students)
  4. the expected term and year of graduation (for all students).

There is a special form for this plan that can be obtained in the Academics office. When completed the form must be returned to the academics office so that it can be kept on record in the student's file. The student and professor should also keep a copy of this form.

There will be a registration hold placed on each student's record at the beginning of the every semester. The student's advisor must email his/her approval of registration or signed academic advisement form each and every semester in order for the hold to be removed and the student allowed to register.

The advisor may either approve of the predetermined courses from the curriculum plan or change the student's courses as needed. If the student requires a change to this plan, a new form must be signed by the advisor and taken to the Academics office. The student may then register for classes for the semester.

There are two ways to register when the academics office removes the hold. The student may either register himself or herself through ISIS on the web, or come into the academics office and register in person.

Please note, when the academics office receives the email or written course plan signed by the professor we will NOT automatically register you each term. You must register by one of the means previously mentioned. REGISTRATION FOR RESEARCH HOURS CAN NOT BE DONE OVER ISIS; THE STUDENT MUST COME BY THE ACADEMIC SERVICES OFFICE TO REGISTER FOR RESEARCH HOURS.
