Introduction
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers graduate students the opportunity
to conduct state-of-the-art research under the supervision of world-class faculty while
pursuing Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degrees in the discipline. Students
can receive financial support, usually through individual faculty, which allows them
to be involved in research projects that will satisfy thesis or dissertation requirements.
Research areas in which a student may become involved include the following: bioactive
ceramics, biomaterials, ceramics and glass processing, composites, computational materials,
electronic materials, environmental stability of materials, machining and manufacturing,
materials chemistry, mechanical behavior of materials, metals and alloys, mining and
minerals, nanotechnologies, optical properties of materials, optoelectronics, particle
science, photonic materials, polymers, recycling, solidification and metals processing,
and surfaces and thin films.
