Undergraduate Program Objectives
Introduction
Engineering design is often limited by the materials (biomaterials, metals, polymers, ceramics, electronic materials)
that are available. Materials Science and Engineering is the study of how the structure and processing of
materials affects the properties and performance of these materials in engineering applications.
The Materials Science and Engineering undergraduate program provides students with opportunities to learn the
fundamental aspects of materials science, and how to apply that knowledge to cutting edge research and technology.
Our goal is that after graduation, our undergraduate students will become engineering practitioners
and graduate students who are:
- Problem solvers - using their technical skills to advance society, science and technology.
- Designers - using their knowledge to improve systems, components or processes.
- Professionals - using their professional skills to create solutions and advance their ideas.
- Role Models - creating solutions that meet the needs of society.
MSE Program Outcomes
The undergraduate program in Materials Science and Engineering is designed for you to learn both the
technical knowledge and professional skills you will need to succeed in your career.
By the time of graduation, you will attain the following skills:
- Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to materials systems.
- Ability to conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data.
- Ability to conduct and analyze design of experiments (DOE).

Ability to apply and integrate knowledge of structure, properties, processing, and performance to
solve materials selection and design problems within realistic constraints.
- Ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams.
- Ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
- Understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Understanding of the economic impact of engineering solutions.
- Understanding of the global, societal, and environmental impact of engineering solutions.
- Ability to engage in lifelong learning.
- Knowledge of contemporary issues.
- Ability to use the techniques, skills, and tools needed for practice as a materials engineer.
