Introduction

The department of Materials Science and Engineering is pleased to offer teachers the opportunity to attend six day workshop from June 22 - June 27, 2008. The department is committed to providing teachers with a series of inquiry and discovery laboratory activities based on the Florida Sunshine State Standards. Instruction will be a synergistic effort by University of Florida professors, two MSE-teach Master Teachers, and MSE graduate students.

About MSE Teach Workshop

This workshop is a project called Materials Science and Engineering for Teachers (MSE-Teach)/ASM Materials Camp for Teachers sponsored by American Society of Materials International (ASM) Materials Education Foundation, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the College of Engineering at the University of Florida. The purpose is to provide science and technology teachers with tools they can use to provide real world, practical examples of how basic science concepts are used in the high-tech industries of today. The specific examples are taken from the field of materials science and engineering in order to show how the design and choice of new materials in high-tech fields and testing are based on fundamental concepts in science and math.

The one week workshop consists of lectures and demonstrations by faculty from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Florida and hands-on laboratory sessions. The teachers are also provided with a number of resources which they can use in their own classrooms. Overall, the goals are to enhance the learning of science and technology by students from elementary through secondary school, provide a basis for future training of their students, and develop a core group of "master" teachers who can assist in further disseminating this information throughout Florida.

This year we will be concentrating on providing teachers with a series of inquiry and discovery laboratory activities based on the Florida Sunshine Standards. Instruction will be a synergistic effort by UF professors, two MSE-teach master teachers and MSE graduate students.

For the summer of 2007, we had educators from Florida, North Carolina, Mississippi, Missouri and Louisiana participating.
