In 1959 Dr. Fred Rhines left Carnegie Mellon University with a dream to come to the University of Florida and establish a program based on all areas of Materials Science and Engineering. This was a novel idea that was just being explored nationally. From these modest beginnings, the UF-MSE Department has grown to be one of the largest programs in the country with 31 faculty members and over 430 students.
It is currently ranked 8th at both the undergraduate and graduate level in both public and private universities according the US News and World Reports. Next year the department will celebrate 50 years since it.s founding as a program. In the entire history of the program that department has awarded 974 BS degrees, 835 MS degrees (366 of them terminal MS) and 531 PhD degrees.
